OUTDOOR LEARNING SPACE

MORTON : PATTISON were appointed to design and build an inclusive outdoor 'amphitheatre' in a primary school to suit both children and adults in learning sessions and performances. The design incorporated local, traditional materials including flint and oak arranged in a contemporary format using steel gabions to create a stepped seating structure. The top of the amphitheatre has a viewing gallery allowing less able users to participate. The structure is settled into the surrounding landscape by use of 'new wave' perennial sensory planting consisting of low maintenance, high biodiversity-value herbs and grasses.

In addition to the amphitheatre MORTON : PATTISON installed 90m of compacted stone path and carried out minor landforming and soft landscaping around the grounds to improve inclusivity and to allow children to use the outdoor space in wet weather.

MORTON : PATTISON were appointed to draw up a cost-estimated masterplan for the arrival area of a new flagship nature reserve. The vision for the former quarry site was to create an outdoor adventure hub encouraging exploration and interaction with the natural environment alongside biodiversity conservation objectives. The design elements consisted of a car park, cafe, bike hire, pump track, education and group activity area, glamping pods, play area and new staff workshop facilities. The interpretive, sculptural and artistic components were communicated through a series of design visualisations produced by our sub-consultant.

The project led on to further work with the client producing interpretation board designs and an interpretive style guide to be used across multi-channel communication outlets.
